What Is Botulinum Toxin Injection into Masseter Muscles?

This treatment involves injecting botulinum toxin into the masseter muscles (jaw muscles) to reduce their size and create a slimmer facial appearance. The effects begin to appear gradually over the course of about 1 month after the procedure, and typically last for around 3 to 6 months. However, if the treatment is repeated 3 to 5 times at intervals of several months, the effects tend to last significantly longer in most cases. Since the product is biologically derived, we ask patients to avoid pregnancy for 3 months following the procedure.

What Is Botulinum Toxin?

Botulinum toxin is a type of protein derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It works by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine, helping to relax muscle tension.

Why does botulinum toxin (Botox) injection reduce a prominent jawline?
Botox works by relaxing the muscles. It takes advantage of the fact that when muscles are less active, they gradually shrink. The prominence of the jawline is often caused by the masseter muscle, which is used when chewing or clenching. Injecting Botox into this muscle suppresses its activity, leading to muscle reduction over time. This results in a slimmer, more defined facial contour and a noticeable small face effect.

How many botulinum toxin (Botox) injections are needed to slim down a prominent jawline?
You can see some slimming effect after just one treatment. However, about three treatments spaced a few months apart are generally recommended for a more noticeable and longer-lasting result. Some patients are satisfied after one session, while others may feel their cheeks look hollowed out.
