Isotretinoin (Acne Treatment)This treatment involves the use of isotretinoin, a vitamin A derivative, for managing acne. Isotretinoin is highly effective in reducing sebum production, and also exhibits strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties against Cutibacterium acnes. It is particularly beneficial for patients with severe inflammatory acne. Uniquely, this treatment may also help improve the underlying skin condition, making it less prone to acne even after the treatment course is completed. Additional benefits may include improvements in overall skin texture, such as reduction of comedones and minimization of pores, brightening of skin tone, and lightening of hyperpigmentation.
While isotretinoin is widely recognized in Western countries as a first-line, essential medication for acne treatment, it is not currently approved by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and therefore is not covered by public health insurance in Japan. The treatment has a reported efficacy rate of over 98% in improving acne; however, the recurrence rate—defined as the return of new acne lesions to more than one-third of the pre-treatment level after completing the course—is approximately 30%.
In most cases, treatment begins with one 20mg tablet per day, taken continuously on a monthly basis. If symptoms do not improve, the dosage may be increased.
Once symptoms stabilize and improve, the dosage is gradually reduced on a monthly basis.
Costs for this treatment may vary depending on the individual.

What Is Isotretinoin (Acne Treatment)?
Isotretinoin (also known as Isotroin) is an acne medication primarily composed of a vitamin A derivative.
Isotretinoin is highly effective in
suppressing sebum production and has
strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects against acne-causing bacteria. It is effective not only for common acne but also for
severe inflammatory acne.
Furthermore, it is
the only treatment that can improve your skin’s condition to reduce acne recurrence even after the treatment ends.
Additional benefits include
reducing clogged pores and pore size,
brightening skin tone, and
lightening dark spots, leading to overall skin quality improvement.
While isotretinoin is widely recognized as a fundamental treatment in Western countries, unfortunately, it is not yet approved by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and therefore is not covered by insurance here.
If any side effects occur, treatment may need to be discontinued.
Please do not stop the medication on your own, as doing so may cause rebound acne or liver dysfunction. Always follow the prescribed dosage and instructions carefully.
