What Is High-Dose Vitamin C IV Drip?

High-dose vitamin C therapy is recognized as an effective complementary treatment for cancer, although it is not covered by insurance.
For cosmetic purposes, the infusion frequency varies from once a week to once a month depending on symptoms, and individual results may differ.
Expected benefits include:

  • Antioxidant effect and melanin synthesis suppression: Helps prevent aging and lifestyle-related issues, reduces and prevents dark spots, and promotes skin whitening.
  • Collagen production promotion: Improves wrinkles, sagging, and enhances skin firmness and elasticity.
  • Regulation of excessive sebum and skin hydration: Improves acne-prone and dry skin.
  • Immune system enhancement: Helps prevent colds and flu, and aids in recovery from fatigue and tiredness.

Our clinic uses preservative-free, domestically produced vitamin C preparations (Meditech International Co., Ltd.).

Required Test Before High-Dose Vitamin C IV

For all patients receiving 25g or more of high-dose vitamin C, a G6PD deficiency test is required once before the first infusion (additional fee applies). The test takes about 10 minutes.

What is G6PD deficiency?
G6PD deficiency (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency) is a very rare condition affecting less than 0.5% of Japanese people. If patients with this deficiency receive high-dose vitamin C infusions, it can cause hemolysis—destruction of red blood cells—which may lead to serious health complications. Therefore, blood testing is mandatory beforehand to ensure safety.

Precautions

  • If repeating this treatment, please allow a 2–3 day interval between sessions.
  • Dry mouth: High-dose vitamin C has a diuretic effect, which may cause dry mouth.
  • Headache or nausea: These may occur if the infusion is received on an empty stomach or when dehydrated. Also, those taking low-dose birth control pills may experience new headaches as a side effect of the pills.
  • Vasovagal response: Temporary dizziness or faintness due to needle stimulation. This usually resolves fully with a short period of rest.

Not Suitable for the Following Individuals:

  • Those with G6PD deficiency: A G6PD test is mandatory before receiving high-dose vitamin C (25g or more). Additional test fee applies.
  • Those undergoing a health checkup soon: This treatment may affect urine sugar and occult blood test results. Please avoid treatment if you have a health check scheduled within a few days.
  • Diabetic patients, especially those using insulin: Blood sugar levels may be inaccurately measured for up to 12 hours after the infusion, making blood glucose control difficult. Therefore, we do not accept such patients.
  • Patients with active heart failure, severe kidney dysfunction, or undergoing dialysis: This treatment is not recommended.

FAQ

Can high-dose Vitamin C IV therapy be combined with other treatments?
If you have recently undergone treatments that cause bruising, such as liposuction, eyelid surgery, nose surgery, petite cosmetic procedures, or skin booster injections, we recommend waiting until the bruising has healed before having a Vitamin C infusion.
Combining high-dose Vitamin C infusions (50g) with other beauty infusions including glutathione on the same day is not recommended. For doses of 12.5g or 25g, caution is advised when combined with other infusions.

I usually take Vitamin C supplements. If I receive high-dose Vitamin C IV therapies, do I still need supplements?
Vitamin C cannot be produced or stored in the body. Taking supplements regularly enhances the effect of Vitamin C infusions, so we recommend continuing both supplements and infusions together for the best results.

Why is high-dose Vitamin C administered by infusion rather than oral supplements?
Oral Vitamin C intake saturates blood levels at about 400 mg per day, and excess amounts are poorly absorbed and excreted. In contrast, infusions can increase blood Vitamin C levels by several tens of times compared to oral intake, delivering a larger amount efficiently throughout the body. Therefore, infusions are more effective for high-dose Vitamin C delivery.

Are there any side effects of high-dose Vitamin C IV therapy?
High-dose Vitamin C infusions are generally very safe, with serious side effects being extremely rare. Mild side effects may include headache or nausea, especially if given on an empty stomach or when dehydrated. Some patients, including those on low-dose birth control pills, may experience headaches not previously noticed. Temporary symptoms like cold sweats, tremors, numbness, or cramps may occur. Intense exercise, trauma, strong massage, or vigorous wringing of cloth before infusion may cause bruising, which resolves naturally. Patients with G6PD deficiency or certain other conditions may not be eligible for this treatment.
